Arjun Tendulkar Takes Five-Wicket Haul As Mumbai Beat Gujarat In Vinoo Mankad Trophy
Arjun Tendulkar grabs headlines with his surname alone. However, on Saturday, he let his performance speak aloud. At the Kholvad Gymkhana Ground in Surat, it was Arjun’s display with the ball that had everyone talking.
His superb, incisive spell of 5/30 ripped apart Gujarat for 142 in the U-19 Vinoo Mankod Trophy, helping domestic giants Mumbai ease to the target for the loss of a solitary wicket.
Arjun silenced the critics in an emphatic manner. As Mumbai won the toss and elected to field first, Arjun knocked over the stumps of Vardhman Dattesh Shah off the second ball of the match. L M Kocher, who had hit 78 against Maharashtra on Friday, was the next batsman to be dismissed. He was caught behind for eight by Vedant Murkar off the bowling of Arjun.
The 19-year-old then ended the stay of the other opener Priyesh for one. He was also caught behind by Murkar leaving Gujarat struggling at 16/3. Far from done, Arjun returned to bowl in the death overs and took the last two wickets to finish with a five-wicket haul.
His stupendous bowling performance earned him praise from the Gujarat U-19 coach as well as the senior team coach, Vijay Patel, who was there to watch the match.
Speaking to TOI, Patel said, “Arjun bowled very well. He deserved the five-wicket haul. He bowled a brilliant spell.”
Heaping further praise on Arjun, Patel added, “I am not saying good about him just because he is the son of Sachin Tendulkar. I had seen him bowl some three to four years back when he had come with the U-16 team in Ahmedabad. He has improved vastly. He has also gained valuable experience after his stint with the U-19 Indian team.”
