God helps people like Sachin Tendulkar: Saeed Anwar
I always thought 200 was possible, particularly because of the way pitches are laid out these days and also the poor quality of bowling at the international level. I’m actually surprised why players like Brian Lara, Sanath Jayasuriya and Sachin Tendulkar did not break the record earlier. I don’t mean to say that Sachin’s 200 came against a weak attack. No doubt, the South Africans have a class attack.
Records are meant to be broken. I broke Sir Vivian Richards’s record and I’m happy that my record has been broken by a great player like Sachin. I have no regrets or ill-feelings. He deserves it. He’s a great player. He deserves to break all the records, not only this one but all possible batting records. I wish him many more records.
What stands out for me is that Sachin loves his cricket. I was not such a great lover of the game. I have not seen a player with more passion, he carries his bat to the dressing room, takes his kit all by himself to the hotel room. He is dedicated to his cricket.
To be honest, I don’t think a player can improve at 36. However, a player like Sachin can sustain his class. He is humble and down to earth. I know and I have seen God help these kind of people. There are many aspects to scoring 200 — fitness, concentration and desire. Sachin has all the qualities. He has the strong desire, he is physically very strong and concentrates hard. The feat is all the more special as you have very little time to score in ODIs.
You can afford to relax in Tests but in ODIs, you have to be on your toes all the time. It is not easy to concentrate for 200 runs. Sachin has done wonderfully well. Knowing Sachin, I think he will go on and on. He has a strong appetite for success and I wish him all the luck. I have seen many great players like Lara, Ricky Ponting. Each of them has his own strong and weak points. Lara was a little bit more talented but Sachin is more disciplined and hard-working. He deserved it.
