“Jasprit Bumrah is best bowler in the world at the moment” Sachin Tendulka
Jasprit Bumrah is the best bowler in the world, said Sachin Tendulkar while lavishing praise on the pacer after Mumbai Indians’ (MI) thrilling 1-run win over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the final of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019. MI won their unprecedented 4th IPL crown and Bumrah was instrumental in his side’s final triumph as he yet again stepped up when it mattered the most to cramp the CSK batsmen in the death overs and ensure his side remained in the contest despite posting a below-par total.
MI managed to post 149/8 in 20 overs, thanks to a late cameo from Kieron Pollard, who smacked 41 runs off 25 balls and bailed his side out of trouble towards the end. CSK looked on course towards a victory when openers Shane Watson and Faf du Plessis got their side off to a solid start with an opening stand of 33 runs. However, CSK lost the plot after Faf’s dismissal as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals.
MI bowlers pulled things back with a crucial run-out decision of MS Dhoni going their way which was enough to pump the Men in Blue to put CSK on the backfoot. CSK required 18 runs off the last two overs and looked set to get past the target with Watson on the crease but Bumrah gave away only 9 runs in the penultimate over to leave Lasith Malinga with 9 to defend in the final over. It would have been just 5 runs from the over but a mistake from wicket-keeper Quinton de Kock saw CSK get a boundary on bye.
“Rahul (Chahar) bowled beautifully along with that I feel (Jasprit) Bumrah was fantastic,” Sachin told Yuvraj Singh post-MI’s victory. He then asked Yuvraj what made Bumrah the special bowler that he is and the veteran all-rounder reckoned the speedster’s action makes him unpredictable for batsmen.
“What do you think makes him such a special bowler?” asked Sachin. “I think his action is a bit awkward. But it’s tough to understand what pace it’s coming. I think he is bowling the best I have seen in his career,” Yuvraj responded.
Sachin, who is associated with MI as an icon, then went on to state that Bumrah according to him is the best bowler in the world. He also backed the pacer to produce an even better performance at the upcoming Wolrd Cup.
“Well, without any doubt. Let me go on a record and say that he is the best bowler in the world at the moment and the best is yet to come,” Sachin said to which Yuvraj nodded in agreement and said – “Absolutely totally agree with you.”
Bumrah finished the game with figures of 2/14 in his four overs and was awarded the Man of the Match in the final. Chahar (1/14) and Malinga (1/49) played brilliant support as MI bagged a second successive final by just 1 run.
