Rohit Sharma batting at a different level, says Sachin Tendulkar
Sachin Tendulkar said Rohit Sharma was batting at a different level in World Cup 2019 and lauded him for his terrific consistency, Rohit Sharma is the 2nd highest run-scorer in the tournament so far with 319 runs from 3 innings.
On Sunday, Rohit Sharma hit 140 against Pakistan at Old Trafford as India won by 89 runs (DLS). This was India’s 7th victory over Pakistan in World Cups and their 3rd of the tournament. India are now 3rd in the points table with 7 points from 4 matches – one match against New Zealand was washed out.
Rohit Sharma had led India’s chase with an unbeaten 122 against South Africa before hitting a stylish half-century against Australia at The Oval on June 9. A week later, Rohit looked good for a double hundred before he fell for 140.
Speaking to India Today after the match, Tendulkar said he liked the fact that Rohit Sharma played with a great strike rate even without appearing to take too many risks.
“Terrific consistency (from Rohit). What I really liked about Rohit was it didn’t appear like he was taking a lot of risks even as he was playing with a phenomenal strike rate.
“The thing that was risky was his running between the wickets. he got lucky a couple of times. Otherwise, his batting was at a different level.
“I have always felt, when Rohit starts playing close to the body on frontfoot, he is going to hurt the opposition,” Tendulkar said.
Tendulkar said Rohit Sharma could have got a 4th double hundred in ODIs had he stayed on a little longer.
“I think I would put Rohit’s performance in this World Cup right up with any other knocks he has played in the past. Had he stayed there any longer, he would got his double hundred. You see his pull of Hassan Ali… When Rohit is in full swing, you don’t want to be bowling short against him. I don’t know where they will bowl, to be honest because Rohit has all the shots. Today (on Sunday), he proved that…. be it a beautiful cut or a flick,” Tendulkar said.
Tendulkar also had a special message for Rohit Sharma.
“Rohit, continue doing what you’re doing. It’s a joy to watch you bat from the commentary box”.
